WELWYN WINE SOCIETY

Wine Tasting in Hertfordshire - TASTINGS

Tastings

We generally hold 8 wine tastings per year, 5 of which are run by external speakers such as specialist wine educators and wine trade professionals. The other 3 events are run by those members who are knowledgeable about wine and may hold wine qualifications themselves. In addition, our May meeting is combined with our AGM and usually comprises a "members choice" tasting as well as a fish and chip supper. We take a break in August and December, times of the year when many members are otherwise engaged. November is reserved for our Annual Wine Fair and Dinner.

Wine tastings are usually held on the fourth Thursday of the month unless otherwise notified.  Tastings take place in the Civic Centre, Prospect Place,Welwyn, Hertfordshire, AL6 9ER.   Tastings are at 7.15 for 7.30 pm and continue until around 9.45 pm.

Our aim is to provide interesting, informative and quality wine tastings in an informal, relaxed and friendly atmosphere for around 50 to 60 people.

External speakers will typically select around 8 wines to taste with a common theme, such as the wines from a particular wine producing country or region. The samples will typically include both white and red wines and may also include examples of sparkling or dessert wine. Sample size will vary from around 30ml for more expensive wines up to 45ml. The speaker will tell us about the wines such as their provenance, viticulture, viniculture, aroma and flavour profiles. They are always pleased to answer questions and take feedback.

Member run tastings may sometimes follow a similar format or adopt a more lively approach with comparative tastings, sometimes with a "blind tasting" element.

Everyone is encouraged to bring their own snacks to enjoy with the wines. Whatever you fancy, from a few bits and pieces to a generously filled picnic hamper!

Members may attend as many or as few tastings as they wish. Attendance at our meetings currently starts at £14.00 for members and £16.50 for guests payable in advance. It is not possible to pay on arrival. Special events with external speakers may be more.

There is plenty of on-site parking available for cars. Entry to the Civic Centre venue is easy and wheelchair accessible.

All attendees must be over 18 years of age.
