WELWYN WINE SOCIETY

Members of the Welwyn Wine Society meet monthly for a wine tasting in the Civic Cente in Welwyn. We savour wines from a selected region of the world with a professional presenter who provides affordable wines, tells us how they were made, what they cost and other interesting details. We compare wines from the Old World with those from the New World and sample wines from unusual places such as Turkey and China. Each tasting provides much lighthearted enjoyment.

For more than 50 years about 40-50 people, members and guests, have met monthly on a Thursday evening to enjoy a glass of wine and a chat with their friends. There is always an opportunity to ask questions.

The monthly wine tasting is an informal, relaxed and sociable occasion and although we have some members who are very knowledgeable about wine, we have no 'wine snobs'.

On each occasion we taste small samples of up to eight wines, usually white and red but have been known to include a rosé. To make the tasting more enjoyable, members bring along their selection of nibbles consisting of breads, biscuits, mild cheeses, patés, crisps, cooked meats and whatever they fancy. At the AGM in May we have a fish and chip supper.

Pre-Covid we supplemented the monthly meetings with two Wine Dinners for about 50 members and their guests when a three-course meal with fine wine at the Welwyn Garden City Golf Club and will resurrect these if interest supports a restart.

At the end of November we have an Annual Wine Fair for about 120 members and their guests at which we can sample about 50 wines followed by a three course-meal. This popular event is held in the Woolmer Green Village Hall and is very much enjoyed by all those attending.
